Is It Really the Seedless Honey Crisp Kumquat?

Documentary updated 2/18/25 in Zone 10A Florida

Searching for a Honey Crisp Kumquat tree seller? Well if you do Google search, two online sellers will pop up, one from Mercari and one from The Rare Fruit Trees. My four friends and I were all desperate to buy a Honey Crisp kumquat tree so we all took the gamble and ordered the tree online from the Hard to Find Trees website.

2/10/25: The owner, Songjian Liang on Facebook, reached out to me via messenger after seeing this documentary and offered to send me a free replacement because my Honey Crisp kumquat grafted scion broke off and the tree died. I appreciated that.

What is Honey Crisp Kumquat?

Honey Crisp Kumquat is a sweet citrus fruit in the kumquat family. It is by far the sweetest kumquat I have tasted. Its sweetest far exceed the Meiwa which I ditched that tree out of my yard after I tasted the Honey Crisp Kumquat since I only have one room for one kind of kumquat and it has to be the sweetest. 😂

How does a Honey Crisp Kumquat taste like?

I had a chance to buy and taste the Honey Crisp kumquat fruits when it was on sale at Enson Market in Orlando, Florida in January 2024. The fruit is so sweet, juicy, and has a very thin skin and no pith. The skin is edible too. The flavor reminds me of a ripen Barlett pear. On a sweetness scale of 10 being the highest, Meiwa is probably a 5 and the Rongan Honey Crisp Kumquat is a 10.  Meiwa is not that sweet compared to this kumquat.  The kids and I do not like eating the Meiwa kumquats, but we love these super sweet Rongan/Honey Crisp Kumquats.

The ideal time to find Honey Crisp Kumquat fruits for sale would be in January and February around Lunar New Year at the big Chinese markets. Here in Central Florida, you can find them during Lunar New Year at Enson Market.

Origin of the Honey Crisp Kumquat tree:

I learned that this is the Rong’an Honey Crisp Kumquat aka Rongan Kumquat from Rong’an, Quangzi, China.

Citrus Potting Mix Recipe

When my little Honey Crisp kumquat tree arrived, I pot it up into a tree gallon size pot with the fancy Fox Farm potting mix. The tree is very happy. I pot it up into a seven gallon pot after six months using the following potting mix.

I mix the citrus and mango potting mix in a 25-gallon pot using the filling ingredients:

  • 1 bag 2 cu ft Lowes Sta Green Potting Mix for Vegetables and Fruits
  • 1/2 bag of Mushroom Compost
  • 1 quart Sunniland Paver Base course sand
  • Fox Farm’s Happy Frog 7-7-3Avocado and Citrus Fertilizer

Visual Growth Progress of my Seedless Honey Crisp Kumquat Tree

9/13/24: The grafted branch of the “Honey Crisp Kumquat” tree broke off because the grafting tape wrapped around the graft line has grew into the graft joint causing the graft to never heal properly.

Despite the weak graft joint, the tree had about 5 fruits.

2/10/25: The owner of Hard To Find Trees website, Songjin Liang on Facebook, reached out to me via messenger after seeing this documentary and offered to send me a free replacement. I appreciated that.

2/14/25: The new Honey Crisp Kumquat tree arrived within two days. Songjian recommend to plant the tree straight into the ground. I am going to pot it up for a while until I find a permanent space for this tree to grow well. I am going to pot this new Honey Crisp kumquat tree in a 3-gallon pot with cow manure, peat moss, coarse perlite fine pine mulch, and worm casting. And give it some citrus tree fertilizer.

2/18/25: This is how the second grafted Seedless Honey Crisp Kumquat tree looks like at four different angles.
