Growing and Tasting Sweet Valentine Lettuce

My documentary of growing and tasting Sweet Valentine lettuce ended January 23, 2025 in Oviedo, Florida, zone 10A.

10/18/24: Seed companies claimed the Sweet Valentine lettuce to be one of the “most sweetest” lettuce of all. My sweet tooth just have to find out myself how sweet is a “sweet lettuce” is going to be. Wish me luck!

10/23/24: I sow the Sweet Valentine lettuce seeds around the base of my Lemon Cattley guava tree

11/18/24: I was weeding my front flowerbed and noticed the SV lettuce seeds has sprouted! I checked everyday with disappointment and kinda forgotten about it. 😂

1/23/25: This is how the Sweet Valentine lettuce has grown now. It’s not at its full mature size yet. The lettuce looks pretty. But looks is not important for an edible plant. It’s all about the taste and texture!

Texture: If you love the tender buttery texture of Buttercrunch lettuce, you will not like the thick leafy Sweet Valentine lettuces.

Taste: For the seed company to describe the Sweet Valentine to be one of the “sweetest lettuce of all” gotta be the biggest lie ever about a lettuce. Sweet Valentine lettuce is NOt sweet at all. As a matter of fact, it has a mild fibrous taste that’s almost bitter. To me, I thought Marvel of Four Seasons lettuce was gross, but this Sweet Valentine lettuce surpass that. I detest the texture and taste of Sweet Valentine lettuces and will make sure to never ever grow it again in this life time.

My favorite lettuces are still Buttercrunch, Bronze Mignonette, Speckled, Tango, and Oakleaf lettuces.

  1. Yes! I just grew this and was so excited to try it and also found the flavor to be so terrible I had to search online to see if anyone agreed! I can’t believe it’s described as sweet – what a waste of time and money
