Grafted Maria Black Avocado Tree

2/12/25: I officially ended the documentary of my Maria Black avocado tree. My friend came to rehome and dug the tree out. I planted this tree because I love Maria Black avocado. My husband likes to eat avocado too but not my kids. Ever since he complained my time is nothing but a waste of time, I was heartbroken and do not want to grow any fruit trees that he likes to eat. I felt it’s been a waste of my time growing anything for him to enjoy but never appreciated. So now I only focus growing what my kids and I like to eat most. I can visit my friend Leaph in West Palm Beach to get me some Maria Black avocados when it ripens on his tree in September instead.

I post of my avocado tree’s growth. The date is imprinted on the image to indicate when the photo was taken to give you an idea of its life timeline.

What does a Maria Black avocado taste like?

Maria Black avocado has a burgundy reddish brown skin when the fruit ripens. The fruit has thick, dense, buttery, nutty flesh with a hint of sweetness to me. I love it more than Hass avocados. Maria Black is my favorite avocado variety for avocado ice cream and smoothie. (I have tasted Hass, Brogdon, Catalina, Choquette, and Florigon avocados.)

Where I bought my Maria Black avocado tree: I bought my grafted Maria Black avocado from Leaph’s Fruit Trees in West Palm Beach. Leaph is a private licensed and wholesale dealer who offers the most rare fruit tree selections I know at an affordable price. Leaph grafted this Maria Black avocado tree using the scions from his fruiting tree in the ground. Here is Leaph’s Maria Black avocado tree:

3/12/20: Here is how my grafted Maria Black avocado tree looked like the day I got it.

4/23/20:  This grafted Maria B. avocado is a dwarf tree and can be potted in a 20 to 25 decorative pot or planted in the ground.  Once this tree is strong enough, it will hold fruits.  No need to wait for several years.

Potting up avocado trees:

I learned avocado trees do not like the standard rich organic DIY potting mix I used with peat moss and pine fines. It holds too much moisture and the leaves turned yellow. So I repot the tree with regular bagged potting mix with 1/3 perlite, and 1/3 coarse sand (not play sand). The tree leaves turned green and took off growing tall quick once I amended the potting soil.

Date I planted my tree into the ground:

April 2024: My grafted Maria Black avocado tree fruited for the first time. There were many flowers blooming, about a dozen became fruits, but only one made it to thumb size until a darn squirrel discovered it. It nibbled on the only fruit I was so excited to have and spit it down by the tree. I was so mad.

I have to find the pictures I posted randomly on Facebook to put it all on my documentary here

1/1/24:

2/12/25: I rehomed (sold) my Maria Black avocado tree to Priyam Prekesh in Orlando, Florida. She came to dug out the tree which took her about 45 minutes to dug it out. She had to rent a Uhaul trailer to fit the 12+ foot tall tree.

I am sad to rehome the Maria Black avocado tree. But I am sad of my husband. After seeing how the root system extends out within the top two feet of the ground level 8 am glad my friend to dig this tree out. If I ever grow an avocado tree again, it would be planted in my backyard away from concrete and driveway.

  1. Hi. Sorry. I don’t give address to private properties. Leaph said to use Facebook Messenger to reach out to him. He doesn’t give out his personal number for strangers. Facebook messenger is free service. Just sign up an account and message him. I have only contacted him via Facebook.

  2. Thank you. My wife has a messenger and we tried to contact him but have not heard from him yet. Hopefully he’ll reply soon. Thank you.

    • I hope you were able to get in touch with Leaph. I sometimes go to West Palm Beach to pick up fruit trees from him. I also offer pickup for local folks in Oviedo/Melbourne areas

  3. Hi,

I’m looking into purchasing a Maria Black Avocado. Can you give an update on how your tree has done since planting, the fruits flavor profile and productivity.

    Thank you,
    Patricia

  4. Thank you for your post. I am about to plant my grafted Maria Black. I also bought an Oh LA La and was looking for info on A and B type trees, as I read they should be planted together.
