My daughter enjoys sewing. After learning to sew by hand with a needle at age eight, my daughter is now ready to learn how to sew with a sewing machine. Let the sewing journey begin! I am documenting my daughter’s sewing progress for beginner’s level here.
Materials Needed:
Note: I get a tiny commission from Amazon when you choose to purchase from my recommended Amazon product link.
- Magic Fly mini sewing machine
- non-stretchy cotton fabric scraps
- thread
- fabric scissors
- straight edge ruler
- marker and pencil
- round lids of different sizes for tracing
- needles for sewing machine
I wanted to teach her how to use my actual sewing machine but the dad was a afraid she would sew her finger like how my big sister did. I researched and bought a mini sewing machine by Magic Fly.

Beginners sewing tip: The MOST important thing is to be observant and make sure the sewing feet is positioned down and our finger is NEVER placed or positioned in front of the needle or sewing foot while sewing. My remembered how by big sister didn’t listen and literally sew through her thumb the first and last time she ever used a sewing machine in her adulthood. She ended up with four stitches on her thumb. SMH
Beginners Sewing Lessons
There are six beginners sewing lessons that I am teaching my daughter. These six lessons apply anytime I switch to a different sewing machine. Learning how to operate the sewing machine and getting used to the functions that each sewing machine has is important before advancing onto any sewing projects.
1. Learn how to turn the sewing machine on and off. I teach my daughter how to turn on and turn off her Magic Fly sewing machine and my Husqvarna sewing machine
2. Learn how to thread the machine
3. Learn how to sew a straight line and make smooth corner turns.

4. Learn how to end the stitch and remove the fabric:
5. Learn how to switch out the bobbin thread
6. Learn how to sew a curved line
I self taught myself the rest and took off from there.
